Finding genuinely good halal Chinese food in London used to mean compromise. A halal section on an otherwise non-halal menu. A promise of "separate preparation" that left you wondering. Or worse - a restaurant that calls itself halal but can't show you the certificates.
At The Greedy Sheep, we did it differently. We didn't add halal to a Chinese restaurant. We built a Chinese restaurant that's halal from the ground up.
What makes halal Chinese food different?
It's not just about the meat. A truly halal kitchen means every ingredient, every oil, every sauce has been checked. There's no alcohol in the cooking. There's no cross-contamination risk because there's nothing non-halal on the premises.
That's what we mean by 100% halal. Not 90%. Not "mostly". The whole kitchen. The whole menu. Every single dish.
Northern Chinese street food - the halal connection
Here's something most people don't know: Northern Chinese cuisine has deep roots in Muslim culinary tradition. The Hui people - Chinese Muslims - have been perfecting lamb noodle soups, rou jia mo, and cumin-spiced dishes for over 2,000 years along the Silk Road.
When you eat at The Greedy Sheep, you're not eating "Chinese food made halal." You're eating food that was always halal - recipes from Xi'an and Lanzhou that have been passed down through generations of Muslim families. If you're new to the area, our guide to halal restaurants in Chinatown London explains how we fit into the wider scene.
What to order
If it's your first time, start with these:
- Lamb Noodle Soup - Hand-pulled noodles in a rich, slow-cooked lamb broth. This is the dish that defines Xi'an street food.
- Rou Jia Mo - The original Chinese "burger." Tender braised lamb in a crispy flatbread. It's been made this way for millennia.
- Pan-Fried Dumplings - Golden bottoms, juicy filling. Simple, perfect.
- Crispy Chilli Beef - Wok-fried with dried chillies and Sichuan pepper. Dangerously moreish.
